KUALA LUMPUR: Women participation in the workforce has been targeted to increase to 55% by 2015, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.

He said currently, only about 46% of women were contributing to the economy.

"Taking into account the importance of striking a good work-life balance, the Government is making relevant changes.

"There are plans to introduce part-time work regulations under the Employment Act 1955 while we are also looking into arrangements to enable women to work from home and engage in part-time or flexi-time options," he said.

Muhyiddin added that according to the International Labour Organisation's Global Employment Trends for Women released in March 2008, the number of working women had increased globally.

"However, they are still occupying low-productivity, low-paid and vulnerable jobs with no social protection, basic rights or voice at work," he said.

Muhyiddin said the Government did not want to see Malaysian women in this category.

"With the emphasis on better education, training and retraining, we would like to see more skilled women contribute towards a globally competitive economy," he said.

The Government also wanted to create 4,000 women entrepreneurs from low-income communities by 2012, said Muhyiddin.

"To boost development in these pockets of poverty, the Government has put in place various skills-building schemes to increase their income-generating power," he said.

Later, at the handover ceremony of three new AW139 helicopters by AgustaWestland to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Muhyiddin said the aircraft could enhance safety for ships plying the country's waters.
